Polar RS800cx Pro Team Edition Limited Edition with Bike Speed and Cadence and USB IrDA adapter Review

Polar RS800cx Pro Team Edition Limited Edition with Bike Speed and Cadence and USB IrDA adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Polar RS800CX for the purposes of training myself on my road bike as an average cyclist. I will divide my review in two parts: 1. Documentation and setting up; and 2. The Polar computer.
Polar can definitely do better in terms of documentation for the Polar computer, the Speed Sensor and the Cadence Sensor. The illustrations were tiny and not clear in the manual. In the process of setting up the Speed Sensor, I had to key in the size of the wheel. Instead of using standard nomenclature for wheel size, one is expected to key in the wheel size configuration in mm. There was no literature that I could find in the manual on keying in the right size. I had to call the local Polar agent to key in the right number.
Then, I tried attaching the Polar heart rate sensor on the chest strap which has two clip buttons to secure the heart rate sensor. After buttoning the heart rate sensor, I removed it from the chest strap and one of the buttons (the female piece) broked from the strap. Fortunately, it took me 1 minute to have a "one-for-one" exchange from the Polar agent with no questions asked, not withstanding that I bought the product online.
The Polar Computer - Pro Trainer Software
If you guys are on Mac - good luck! The software is compatible on Windows OS only. Lucky me, I have both OS on my Mac and managed to load the Pro Trainer Software. It is pretty cool in terms of what it records but I wished it has some cookie cutter training programs that I could export to the Polar Computer. I had to design my own training program, if I were to venture beyond the "My Own Zone" program, which just tells you that you are thrashing yourself beyond your heart rate zone.
So, for a premium heart rate model, Polar can do better!

My title says everything. I hate to buy replacement items, mainly when you spent a lot of money to buy the product, in this case the Garmin 310 XT. The original band didn't resist so much time, even in a regular use. I hope (and pray) that I won't need in the next future to buy one more band.

Garmin - GPS receiver band - Garmin Forerunner 405CX Review

Garmin - GPS receiver band - Garmin Forerunner 405CX

At the time of this review, the item pictured here is the soft velcro strap replacement for the Garmin Forerunner 405 watches. I ordered it and received a replacement OEM rubber strap, which is the wrong item. I wrote to their customer service and received automated authorization for return, so I'm not sure if any human ever saw my reason for the return. So, I'm not sure if anyone at AntOnline knows that the item pictured here is different from the one they're shipping. Take that into account if you order this item! Otherwise, shipping was prompt and the (wrong) item was well packed.

I installed this on my road bike in just a few minutes (ok, probably 15 mins because I check and double check before tightening the straps). It was very easy and the instructions are very detailed. It synced up to my Garmin FR60 without any issue. It provides cadence AND speed/distance with this one device. Great product.

Garmin Hook-and-loop fastener wrist and expander strap (replacement, green), includes springs and tool

This strap is excellent; if you own the forerunner 201! I bought this because the 'bought with' info on amazon indicated this might work with the Forerunner 305 that I received as an early Christmas gift. It does NOT fit with the garmin 305!
I bought Gps, Hook-and-loop Fastener Wrist, part number 010-10713-00, instead and it works like a charm. My 5 star review here reflects the overall quality of the piece, but I thought it would be helpful for any other Garmin Shoppers to know what they were getting (since this item shows up prominently if you search for a velcro strap for the 205/305.

Garmin 305 Forerunner Review

Garmin 305 Forerunner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use mine for cycling and running, the direct link to see your workouts mapped on GOOGLE EARTH is FANTASTIC!!!! (the included software is far more stable than the junk Polar included with their HRM's.
Heart rate strap with replaceable battery is coded and comfortable. It's better in my opinion than the Polar products (of which I've owned three)
This is much better than the Forerunner 201 which I previously owned (locks on satellites 10 times faster) and I'd avoid the 405 unless you really want to use this watch as a normal day to day wristwatch (check out the 405 reviews)
One nice feature is being able to customize the display screens. Another review criticized the 305 for the numbers being too small to read while exercising. I don't have an issue but would point out that you can significantly increase the size of the display by simply displaying fewer fields.
My only complaint is that it's easy to leave it on and run the battery down - which is a bummer if you're just about to work out. I wish there was an "auto off" feature which would shut it down if it detects no movement or heart rate within an hour or so. Fortunately, with Li-Ion batteries, as little as a 10 minute charge gives you enough juice for a 90 minute run.
If you've found this review to be helpful, please let me know!

Garmin Indoor Foot Pod Accessory for Forerunner 305 Review

Garmin Indoor Foot Pod Accessory for Forerunner 305
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great product, it's almost everything I expected from it. Its size is not bad, even a little smaller than the Polar S-625X's foot piece and also runs on a AAA battery that seems to last at least as much as the S-625X's. Its precision is very good as long as you calibrate it correctly, "fine tune" it carefully through the first 5 to 10 runs, and then keep your pace somewhat steady. I should clarify that the only other inertial sensor I have used before is the previously mentioned Polar S625X which behaves very similarly, that is, it accumulates some error if you change your pace or inclination (climb or downhill) significantly. One drawback is that in order to attach Garmin's Foot Pod to the shoe, you have to almost completely remove the shoelace. This is because unlike Polar's sensor, it's all one piece; this makes it very impractical to move from one pair of shoes to the other, if like me, you have 4 or 5 pairs of running shoes which you "rotate" during the week. What I did was chose one pair to always use indoors. Lastly, I want to comment, that it would be VERY VERY nice if you could use the Forerunner 305's GPS functionality to calibrate the Foot Pod and not having to run a known distance on a track or somewhere else. Since the Forerunner 305 is so precise and reliable, why not automatically use its distance information for calibration? As a matter of fact, when I calibrated mine, what I did is use my Forerunner 305 to mark an 800m track and then ran it again while calibrating the Foot Pod. Why not do it automatically? That would have saved me a run! Well, those are my 2¢ worth... Pablo

The Garmin Forerunner 305 is a vital training tool for runners and other outdoor athletes. But its speed and distance calculations rely on a a GPS signal from the skies above, leaving those who want to run or train indoors, well, out in the cold.Garmin has solved this problem with the innovative Forerunner 305 Foot Pod. This shoe-mounted accessory will provide accurate pace and distance to the Forerunner 305 when GPS reception is unavailable, such as when you're training on treadmills or indoor tracks. Speed and distance information is calculated in the Foot Pod and transferred to the Forerunner, where information from the Foot Pod is automatically displayed and stored.
Dynastream Technology The Foot Pod is built on Dynastream technology, which solves the challenge of accurately measuring a user's speed and distance in real time. The system was designed to measure each stride via a patented accelerometer, which measures all parameters of each foot stride, computes that data, then wirelessly transmits speed and distance information to the Forerunner 305 wrist unit via a 2.4 GHz signal. To date, Dynastream technology is the first and only commercially viable, accurate stride analysis technology that can be used outside the laboratory environment.
Simple to UseOnce the Foot Pod is turned on, the Forerunner 305 recognizes its wireless signal and asks if you wish to train using the Foot Pod instead of with the Forerunner's built-in GPS. Once confirmed, the Forerunner 305 deactivates the GPS and the Foot Pod begins measuring the workout. The Foot Pod communicates to the wrist unit using Dynastream's ANT Sport wireless technology, a commonly available platform for connectivity and interoperability between sports accessories and equipment. The unit features a simple and secure lace-mounted attachment, and runs on a single AAA battery that offers 70 hours of typical use. The Foot Pod is 97 percent accurate out of the box and 99 accurate percent when calibrated. It can also be worn in tandem with the Forerunner 305's wireless heart rate monitor.
Note: The Forerunner 305 needs to be updated to software version 2.5 before it will be compatible with the Foot Pod. You can download the software update at garmin.com/support.

Garmin Edge 305 Waterproof Cycling GPS With Speed/Cadence Review

Garmin Edge 305 Waterproof Cycling GPS With Speed/Cadence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Garmin, with the Edge 305 heart rate/cadence, has set the standard and literally eliminated the competition. The only thing the others can do at this point is to copy in attempt to duplicate. We have (2) with HR and CAD. Both have been used on the flats of Los Angeles County to the hills of Orange/San Diego County. The GPS has never failed to work. Actually nothing on the Edge 305 has failed to work with about 1000 miles on each. You can program the screen to display multiple items and with a glance see all of your desired information. I monitor Speed, Distance, Elapsed ride time, Time of day, HR, CAD and Calories. Heck, The Edge 305 is better than the bike! The training software is also outstanding.
The only negatives have nothing to do with actual computer performance and in my opinion include:
*Price-This toy aint cheap.
*Size-Relatively big for a bike computer, but very light.
*Battery-Our units both are safe from four (4) to six (6)
hours.

Whether you're prepping for your next century ride or want a more accurate way to measure your performance on the trails, take your training to the edge with the Garmin Edge 305CAD GPS-enabled Personal Trainer and Cycle Computer. The Edge 305CAD is easy to use, requires no calibration, and features customizable screens and data fields to meet your needs. Measuring speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb, descent, and more, the 305CAD will help you to always know where you are and how far you've gone.
The Edge 305CAD goes a step beyond its little brother--the Edge 205--with a built-in barometric altimeter and speed/cadence monitor. The altimeter delivers extremely accurate elevation readings, and a self-calibrating wireless sensor delivers speed and cadence data to the Edge 305CAD. The sensor mounts to your bike's rear chain stay. A wheel magnet mounts to the rear wheel to deliver speed data, while a cadence magnet attaches to the crank arm to deliver pace data. In addition, the Edge 305CAD is compatible with the Garmin Heart Rate Monitor. This optional monitor delivers heart rate data via a chest strap equipped with a robust wireless transmission.
The Edge 305CAD is easy to use. Simply take it out of the box, snap it into the included bike mount, and hit the road. The high-sensitivity GPS receiver knows your position in tree cover and canyons, making the Edge 305CAD an extremely reliable navigation device. And with the customizable cycle computer, you can select from up to eight different data fields for continuous feedback. Garmin goes well beyond typical cycle computers by integrating GPS technology for basic navigation. In addition, the Edge 305CAD gives you the ability to overlay your ride data onto a course map and even "race" a virtual partner that makes training fun and helps push you toward your goals.
The included PC-based Training Center software gives you the tools to create workouts, manage and download courses, and create a detailed post-ride analysis that charts your performance and measures your speed, distance, climb, descent, and heart rate data against varying terrain, elevation, and other conditions. And with the Edge 305CAD's built-in USB interface, it's quick and easy to upload and download the information you need.
The virtual partner screen depicts a digital cyclist (representing your desired speed) in relation to your real-time speed. From this set of data the icons will show how far ahead or behind you are from your digital competitor. The Courses feature allows you race against a recorded course to try and match previously set speeds at every point along the way.
Training in urban areas can be tricky, and undesirable traffic can skew training data. To help remedy this problem, Garmin has included an auto-pause function that pauses the training timer when you slow down below a specified speed and resumes when you speed up again so you can focus on your ride, not on your data collection. And with the auto lap function, this smart little device automatically triggers a lap every time you pass a specified location or travel a preset distance.
With its sleek, waterproof design (the Edge 305CAD meets IEC 60529 IPX7 standards, which means that its components can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes), the Edge 305CAD is the perfect companion on any bike, and it attaches to either the stem or handlebars. This lightweight device (88 grams) is powered by an 800mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery and delivers an average of 12 hours of use per charge. The rugged case frames an easy-to-read, large, backlit display that makes it a breeze to view the data fields. So whether you're racing against your virtual partner, fighting to shave precious seconds off your old record, or training for the next big race, the Edge 305CAD will help to monitor your progress and make you a better cyclist.
What's in the Box Edge 305 with speed/cadence sensor, bike mount, Training Center CD, A/C charger, USB PC interface cable, Quick reference guide, and owner's manual.

Garmin Forerunner Quick Release Kit Review

Garmin Forerunner Quick Release Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This kit contains a velcro wrist strap with a sturdy plastic mounting clip. The original strap pieces are permanently removed using the supplied tool, then the strap pins are replaced into the 305 body. The pins can then clip into the mount on the velcro strap, or the identical part of the bike mount. Removing the unit from the bike and putting it on your wrist, or vice-versa, takes less than 5 seconds.
The reviewer who said you have to take several minutes to re-attach the original wrist straps after taking the 305 off your bike seems to have failed to grasp the concept; the velcro strap *permanently* replaces the original straps.
The only potential downside I can think of is that the clip on the velcro wrist strap could hang up on long sleeved clothing, like a wetsuit, so triathletes will want to put the strap on during T1. Other than that, this is a very handy piece of kit!

The features of this particular item number/seller are mis-represented as a Foretrex 205, but as you look at the item's photograph the word Forerunner is clearly visible.
Garmin GPS FORETREX 205 Wrist Wearable Personal Navigator - 010-00361-00

THe two designs have very different purposes.
The actual Foretrex models are for designed for self-location in a rural/rugged environemnt such as would require camping gear, hiking boots, etc... park rangers, hunters use the Foretrex's for personal location when in the deep forest or other not so well known areas. The Foretrexs have MGRS coordinates and datum available for the user for usage with topographic maps. If you go to the back roads and use UTM of Military maps this is what you want to have on your person.
The Forerunner models are designed for fitness. They alow an individual to track his path, pace and speed + maybe monitor his heart rate and stress levels. This is nice, BUT THEY WILL NOT tell (other than Lat/Long) your ground location on a UTM, or MGRS style of topographic map. The Forerunner is for serious athletics. If you are an exercise enthusiast or a professional athlete your want the Forerunner model.
This review is mainly an attempt to clarify for Amazon's buyers/sellers of what the difference of the two styles.

Garmin Forerunner 50 Water Resistant Running GPS With Heart Rate Monitor and Foot Pod Review

Garmin Forerunner 50 Water Resistant Running GPS With Heart Rate Monitor and Foot Pod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research before purchasing and was down to the 305, 405, and 50. I really wanted a GPS watch, but the price of the Forerunner 50 with footpod and HR monitor couldn't be beat. I also liked the smaller watch and the fact that it didn't need to be charged.
After owning it a week:
I really like the watch. I don't typically wear them, but it is very comfortable. It is only slightly larger than a typical watch and has a fine adjustment on the band. I'm wearing it all the time.
The hardware is impressive. The foot pod and HR monitor worked very well right out of the box, and were comfortable to wear. They "paired" right away and were ready to go when I was ready to run. The ANT installation went as advertised on windows vista, and the upload works automatically for Garmin Training Center, but not Garmin Connect.
Possible improvements:
For the watch itself, the number of "views" while in training mode can be confusing. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it with use or reading manual, but it is clearly more than I'm used to.
Installation: The process seemed to drive you toward choosing either Garmin Training Center (software on your computer) or Garmin Connect (web sofware), but not both. I didn't know the pro/con of either, so I wanted to try both. It was awkward when it wanted me to install ANT drivers again for the installation of the second one. I canceled the installation at that point - but found that Training Center was installed.
Software: It is really not clear to me if Garmin Training Center is still being developed. They seem to be improving Garmin Connect (web) regularly, but at its current state, it doesn't have any benefit over Training Center. (remember - I'm not seeing the GPS/maps, so maybe there is distinction there). So after a week, I still find myself bouncing back and forth. There are a few bugs in Garmin Connect and a few notable features that I would really like to see (that is available in other web training software).
Results:
I'm very happy with the HR monitor and cadence results. They seem spot on and reliable. I'm still working on the distance and pace. I did a test 3 mile run on a measured course and found that it recorded 3.1 miles. I messed up a calibration run by hitting the wrong button, so I'll be trying that again (a subsequent 8 mile run was recorded as a 9 mile run... argghh). I've found that the instantaneous pace is not accurate, but hope it will improve with calibration. Garmin Connect is also doing something weird with the average pace calculation... but I think that is a bug that will be fixed.
Overall I'm very happy with the purchase, but hope they continue to improve the software. Currently, that is the weakest link. If they don't, there may be other sites that accept forerunner uploaded data to fill the gap.

Timex Global Trainer Triathlete Bundle (Heart Rate Monitor + Speed/Cadence Sensor) Review

Timex Global Trainer Triathlete Bundle (Heart Rate Monitor + Speed/Cadence Sensor)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is without question the worst product on the market I have yet experienced. The bottom line: take your chances with a different manufacturer.
If you want a watch that DOESN'T sync with the cadence monitor, DOESN'T sync with the heart rate monitor and rarely finds a GPS signal, then this watch is for you. If however you are a serious athlete, or just expect to get what you pay for, then you will be very disappointed in the Timex Global Trainer.
If you plan on taking your chances by purchasing this device and need to ship the watch back to Timex for repair, count on a 4 week inconvenience of being without the training device. The lousy warranty, return policy and customer service is Timex's way of saying thank you for being a sucker and buying our product.
In addition, data loaded from the watch to the Timex Device Agent software is out of sync. Loaded times, distances, etc. are off by a few seconds, feet, etc. The only explanation is poor firmware/software design and development. One more frustration you can look forward to if you purchase this product.
The Timex Global Trainer is a great concept, but unfortunately Timex failed to bring a reliable product to market, and more importantly, failed to understand the market itself. A training aid like this can be invaluable, when it works. If it doesn't work it's just an extreme annoyance embedded in an already demanding schedule.
I will never buy Timex products again. I don't like flushing money down the drain, and I have enough to worry about juggling work, training and family without troubleshooting what is suppose to be a simple piece of technology.
Spend your money with a company that "gets" athletes' and builds reliable products.

Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS Personal Training Device Review

Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS Personal Training Device
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have recently purchased a Forerunner 301 after having used a Sports Instruments heart rate monitor for about a year. The heart rate monitor was excellent, and certainly usefull in the gym - rather than wait a certain length of time between sets, wait until your HR is below 120bpm. It allows you to pace yourself much more.
When it comes to running, it is difficult to measure your performance (time, heart rate, and distance) over the days and weeks. A heart rate monitor is good, but when training you need to push yourself and will always have a high heart rate.
The forerunner is a completely different animal. So different, that there really isn't any fair comparison at all.
With this puppy on your arm you can build a workout (they are quite simple but effective) on your pc, slap it on the forerunner, and off you go. Great running feedback, and excellent info when transferred to the pc. Everything is easy to do - not quite WinXP wizard easy, but simple none the less.
If you live in a large city, forrested areas, or anywhere with sky obstructions, then it may give your trouble with reception. I have had a gps for years, and with my wifi experience I knew that reliable reception was going to be an issue. However, for me I found the reception excellent. Great in fact! In my lounge I can still get a lock with 4 good strength sattelites! If I stop it reacts within 1 second, and another second it knows I have stopped (due to the 1 second display update speed). Much better gps calculations than my garmin gps12.
If you are gagety inclined, and ARE taking (not just wanting or planning to) your running or biking seriously then without a doubt, this is the machine for you.
It isn't too big, but big enough to read. Locks on in less than 1 minute in my small back yard, and has stellar reaction time. Perhaps even just keeping track of your exercise history is worth it for you? Or the in running feedback? Or the calorie (much more realistic than anythng else I have seen) info?
I am very happy with my buy. I paid $230 for it. Worth every last buck. From my experience I have no trouble recommending the Forerunner 301 to any one who is taking their running seriously!!

The Garmin Forerunner 301 is the next exciting addition to the Forerunner lineup. Take your workouts to the next level with all the great GPS features found in the Forerunner 201, plus the added capability of a continuous heart rate monitor. Knowing your heart rate while exercising lets you measure your exercise intensity and performance, giving you a powerful training tool. The Forerunner 301 training profiles can be customized for running, cycling, and other sports. For those interested in losing weight, improving fitness, reaching peak athletic performance, or just improving health to reduce heart-related problems, the Forerunner 301 delivers.
The easy-to-use, two-piece system consists of the wrist unit and a digital heart rate transmitter that you wear around your chest. The transmitter is coded that so there is no interference from other heart rate monitor users nearby. The 301 unit continuously monitors heart rate, speed, distance, pace, and calories burned. A heart rate zone chart, included with the manual, helps you target specific heart rate zones for optimal training. The unit's built-in alerts help you maintain those heart rate zones. For those who don't want to fuss with the charts, there's an AutoLearn feature that allows the unit to learn your maximum heart rate and set zones accordingly. Pace, time, distance, interval workout, and advanced custom workout alerts are also included. Meanwhile, the AutoPause feature pauses and resumes the training timer based on a specified speed. Finally, the AutoLap feature records lap data when you reach a specified distance. Don't worry about running out of room for your lap data; the unit boasts a 5,000-lap memory.
Like the Forerunner 201, the 301 also doubles as a basic navigator. You can mark your starting point as a specific location, see your current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to your starting point. Garmin Wrist strap kit Review

I purchased the Garmin Wrist strap to replace the existing straps on my Forerunner 405. While the only reason I needed to replace the original strap was because I have a dog who decided to turn my GPS watch into a chew toy, I'm actually pretty glad he did chew it or I wouldn't have discovered this product! The original straps were hard and resulted in blisters on my wrist from rubbing during my long runs. The velcro strap is a dream in comparison. Soooo comfortable and easy to make the switch. The only issue I could foresee would be the fabric straps starting to smell from the sweat but I haven't had to deal with that yet.
I only gave it four stars because I had purchased the green forerunner and, with black being the only option, the black strap and green watch face does look a little funny. However, I'm more concerned about function over form.
Oh, almost forgot... I thought I could get a deal and originally bought the Garmin wrist strap that is selling for $19.99. That one is for earlier models, it doesn't contain the required adapters needed to convert the 405. Don't make the same mistake I did!
