Polar RS800cx Pro Team Edition Limited Edition with Bike Speed and Cadence and USB IrDA adapter Review

Polar RS800cx Pro Team Edition Limited Edition with Bike Speed and Cadence and USB IrDA adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Polar RS800CX for the purposes of training myself on my road bike as an average cyclist. I will divide my review in two parts: 1. Documentation and setting up; and 2. The Polar computer.
Polar can definitely do better in terms of documentation for the Polar computer, the Speed Sensor and the Cadence Sensor. The illustrations were tiny and not clear in the manual. In the process of setting up the Speed Sensor, I had to key in the size of the wheel. Instead of using standard nomenclature for wheel size, one is expected to key in the wheel size configuration in mm. There was no literature that I could find in the manual on keying in the right size. I had to call the local Polar agent to key in the right number.
Then, I tried attaching the Polar heart rate sensor on the chest strap which has two clip buttons to secure the heart rate sensor. After buttoning the heart rate sensor, I removed it from the chest strap and one of the buttons (the female piece) broked from the strap. Fortunately, it took me 1 minute to have a "one-for-one" exchange from the Polar agent with no questions asked, not withstanding that I bought the product online.
The Polar Computer - Pro Trainer Software
If you guys are on Mac - good luck! The software is compatible on Windows OS only. Lucky me, I have both OS on my Mac and managed to load the Pro Trainer Software. It is pretty cool in terms of what it records but I wished it has some cookie cutter training programs that I could export to the Polar Computer. I had to design my own training program, if I were to venture beyond the "My Own Zone" program, which just tells you that you are thrashing yourself beyond your heart rate zone.
So, for a premium heart rate model, Polar can do better!

Garmin - GPS receiver band - Garmin Forerunner 405CX Review

At the time of this review, the item pictured here is the soft velcro strap replacement for the Garmin Forerunner 405 watches. I ordered it and received a replacement OEM rubber strap, which is the wrong item. I wrote to their customer service and received automated authorization for return, so I'm not sure if any human ever saw my reason for the return. So, I'm not sure if anyone at AntOnline knows that the item pictured here is different from the one they're shipping. Take that into account if you order this item! Otherwise, shipping was prompt and the (wrong) item was well packed.

I installed this on my road bike in just a few minutes (ok, probably 15 mins because I check and double check before tightening the straps). It was very easy and the instructions are very detailed. It synced up to my Garmin FR60 without any issue. It provides cadence AND speed/distance with this one device. Great product.

Garmin 305 Forerunner Review

Garmin 305 Forerunner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use mine for cycling and running, the direct link to see your workouts mapped on GOOGLE EARTH is FANTASTIC!!!! (the included software is far more stable than the junk Polar included with their HRM's.
Heart rate strap with replaceable battery is coded and comfortable. It's better in my opinion than the Polar products (of which I've owned three)
This is much better than the Forerunner 201 which I previously owned (locks on satellites 10 times faster) and I'd avoid the 405 unless you really want to use this watch as a normal day to day wristwatch (check out the 405 reviews)
One nice feature is being able to customize the display screens. Another review criticized the 305 for the numbers being too small to read while exercising. I don't have an issue but would point out that you can significantly increase the size of the display by simply displaying fewer fields.
My only complaint is that it's easy to leave it on and run the battery down - which is a bummer if you're just about to work out. I wish there was an "auto off" feature which would shut it down if it detects no movement or heart rate within an hour or so. Fortunately, with Li-Ion batteries, as little as a 10 minute charge gives you enough juice for a 90 minute run.

I purchased this item, and to be honest i was very unsatisfied. The heart rate monitor works perfect but, if you actually thought your GPS watch was going to give you the distance you run, .... you are wrong, you will need to spend another 100 dollars on a foot pod for the watch.
I should have bought the same watch i previously had.. nike + watch which comes with the foot pod and synchs with your phone ipod or comptuer for only 50 dollars. Def not worth the money, wouldnt buy it again.

Garmin 010-10889-01 Forerunner 305/205 Quick Release Bike Mount Replacement Review

Garmin 010-10889-01 Forerunner 305/205 Quick Release Bike Mount Replacement
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this idea. Now my Forerunner 305 can be used both on the bike and (with the wrist adaptor I also purchased) when I run. I bought three - one for the road-bike, one for the mountain bike, and one for the tri-bike. The Garmin can handle and records separate for all three bikes.
I jury-rigged it so it sits on the stem and it works well - I crossed the "zippies" versus through the slots where you would normally mount it on the bar. I like it better on the stem.
ONLY ONE CAUTION - if you do what I did and stem-mount it, make sure that the metal watch stems sit tight inside the end clips when you put it on the bike or you'll "launch" the garmin (like I did the first time I tried it) when you hit a bump in the road or a seam in the pavement. The garmin is a tough litle bugger and took the "hit" though.
Buy it.

Garmin GPS FORETREX 205 Wrist Wearable Personal Navigator - 010-00361-00 Review

Garmin GPS FORETREX 205 Wrist Wearable Personal Navigator - 010-00361-00
Average Reviews:

The features of this particular item number/seller are mis-represented as a Foretrex 205, but as you look at the item's photograph the word Forerunner is clearly visible.
Garmin GPS FORETREX 205 Wrist Wearable Personal Navigator - 010-00361-00

THe two designs have very different purposes.
The actual Foretrex models are for designed for self-location in a rural/rugged environemnt such as would require camping gear, hiking boots, etc... park rangers, hunters use the Foretrex's for personal location when in the deep forest or other not so well known areas. The Foretrexs have MGRS coordinates and datum available for the user for usage with topographic maps. If you go to the back roads and use UTM of Military maps this is what you want to have on your person.
The Forerunner models are designed for fitness. They alow an individual to track his path, pace and speed + maybe monitor his heart rate and stress levels. This is nice, BUT THEY WILL NOT tell (other than Lat/Long) your ground location on a UTM, or MGRS style of topographic map. The Forerunner is for serious athletics. If you are an exercise enthusiast or a professional athlete your want the Forerunner model.
This review is mainly an attempt to clarify for Amazon's buyers/sellers of what the difference of the two styles.

Garmin Forerunner FR60 w/ Footpod Review

Garmin Forerunner FR60 w/ Footpod
Average Reviews:

This is a great product for cross training. I have started triathlons and the footpod works like a charm in telling me how far I've run. There is also a bike cadence sensor that is available to track how far you've biked, but I haven't tried that out yet. The heart rate monitor also works great. The setup of the watch is a bit tricky and confusing, but go online to Garmin and they have a lot of videos to help figure it out. Relatively inexpensive given the features and I've read that the foot pod technology is actually more accurate than GPS. Highly recommended.

My Garmin was working fine. I lost my Garmin wall charger so i decided to purchase this rapid wall charger. After a week of use my battery on the Garmin stopped holding a charge. The Garmin will work when connected to a computer but immediately die when disconnected. Even though it is indicating a full charge.
Sent my forerunner back to Garmin for repair and paid $99.00. Coincidence? I don't know but i won't be using this charger again

Garmin 010-00679-05 Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT Stick Review

Garmin 010-00679-05 Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own the Forerunner 305 and love it except for the large size of the watch when I am running. I considered getting the new 405, but since I already owned the foot pod and I actually like the larger unit (read as "larger screen")of the 305 while on the bike, I decided to just add to my current system with the Garmin 50. The GPS function of the 305 is nice, but while I tend to explore on the road bike I also tend to travel the same routes over and over while running, so the GPS functions are not really necessary. The Garmin 50 is super light and perfect for running. Via the ANT stick it will update Garmin Connect (the on-line training record) and Garmin Training Center automatically, so they are always synched. The display is small and only displays two pieces of info at on time, such as heart rate and distance or distance and pace, but I find that's all I usually need and I can check the rest of the info at the end of the workout. I tested the foot pod distance readings against a known distance and the 305's GPS reading, and it was accurate out of the box and did not require calibration.
The only problems I have had are that the date that the watch records for workouts is 7 days off and, according to Garmin, cannot be corrected. The date on the Time Display is correct, though, so it's still accurate as a watch, and the date shows up correctly when you upload the workout to Garmin Training Center. I'm sure they will fix this glitch in the future, but it's a minor irritation. This is a great unit.

Garmin Forerunner 50 Water Resistant Running GPS With Heart Rate Monitor and Foot Pod Review

Garmin Forerunner 50 Water Resistant Running GPS With Heart Rate Monitor and Foot Pod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research before purchasing and was down to the 305, 405, and 50. I really wanted a GPS watch, but the price of the Forerunner 50 with footpod and HR monitor couldn't be beat. I also liked the smaller watch and the fact that it didn't need to be charged.
After owning it a week:
I really like the watch. I don't typically wear them, but it is very comfortable. It is only slightly larger than a typical watch and has a fine adjustment on the band. I'm wearing it all the time.
The hardware is impressive. The foot pod and HR monitor worked very well right out of the box, and were comfortable to wear. They "paired" right away and were ready to go when I was ready to run. The ANT installation went as advertised on windows vista, and the upload works automatically for Garmin Training Center, but not Garmin Connect.
Possible improvements:
For the watch itself, the number of "views" while in training mode can be confusing. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it with use or reading manual, but it is clearly more than I'm used to.
Installation: The process seemed to drive you toward choosing either Garmin Training Center (software on your computer) or Garmin Connect (web sofware), but not both. I didn't know the pro/con of either, so I wanted to try both. It was awkward when it wanted me to install ANT drivers again for the installation of the second one. I canceled the installation at that point - but found that Training Center was installed.
Software: It is really not clear to me if Garmin Training Center is still being developed. They seem to be improving Garmin Connect (web) regularly, but at its current state, it doesn't have any benefit over Training Center. (remember - I'm not seeing the GPS/maps, so maybe there is distinction there). So after a week, I still find myself bouncing back and forth. There are a few bugs in Garmin Connect and a few notable features that I would really like to see (that is available in other web training software).
Results:
I'm very happy with the HR monitor and cadence results. They seem spot on and reliable. I'm still working on the distance and pace. I did a test 3 mile run on a measured course and found that it recorded 3.1 miles. I messed up a calibration run by hitting the wrong button, so I'll be trying that again (a subsequent 8 mile run was recorded as a 9 mile run... argghh). I've found that the instantaneous pace is not accurate, but hope it will improve with calibration. Garmin Connect is also doing something weird with the average pace calculation... but I think that is a bug that will be fixed.
Overall I'm very happy with the purchase, but hope they continue to improve the software. Currently, that is the weakest link. If they don't, there may be other sites that accept forerunner uploaded data to fill the gap.

Garmin Foot Pod for Forerunner 305, 405, and 50 Review

Garmin Foot Pod for Forerunner 305, 405, and 50
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have my Foot Pod paired with my Garmin Forerunner 305 and am very satisfied. The Foot Pod has a plastic bracket that fits under my shoe string, while the Foot Pod fits over my shoe string. It can be a little difficult to get the two pieces to click together, but when they do they form a secure arrangement. I followed the instructions in the Forerunner manual and paired the Foot Pod with the Forerunner on the first try. Once this is done it does not have to be repeated since the Forerunner automatically detects the Foot Pod from then on.
The Foot Pod measures my pace in strides per minute and also measures my distance traveled. I am a little disappointed that the Forerunner allows the distance measured by the Foot Pod to over ride the distance measured by the GPS in the Forerunner. I suspect the distance measured by the GPS is more accurate, but I can not find an option to force the GPS distance to be used while the Foot Pod is in use. Walking the same course results is a measured distance of 3.26 miles using the GPS and 3.30 miles using the Foot Pod, which I feel is good agreement. I did not have to follow the calibration instructions to achieve these results.
Overall I have found the Foot Pod a great addition to my exercise equipment, especially when I am inside and out of range of the GPS satelittes.

Garmin Forerunner 101 Waterproof Running GPS Review

Garmin Forerunner 101 Waterproof Running GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Garmin Forerunner 101 is exactly the same as the popular Forerunner 201, with a couple of small changes. Being the case, I won't review the actual product since everything that needs to be said about it's GPS features can be found in the reviews for the Forerunner 201.
The most notable difference with the 101 is that it uses 2 AAA batteries istead of being rechargeable like the 201. At first I thought this was a big detraction to buying it, but it's really not that bad. Battery life is decent, although not as high as with the 201, which gets up to 13 hours of use on a full charge. But if you're not a marathon runner and just run a few miles on your runs, this shouldn't matter much. The only hassle is having the batteries go dead during the middle of a run, which really sucks if you're into knowing exactly how far you've gone. You have to keep an eye on the battery life before going out. The batteries don't really effect the weigh or size of the product though.
The second major difference is that this unit does not interface with your PC. This also isn't too big of a problem because, currently, the Garmin software is really lacking. Hopefully they will improve on it with time, but the PC software is nowhere near as nice as it could be at this stage. You can view a graph of your altitude for your run, and graphs of your pace and speed, and that's about it. Otherwise the software is really crummy. You can't even zoom in on your map like you can with the actual unit.
If you're serious about running, I would highly suggest the Forerunner 201 over this product, mainly because the price difference is so negligible. You can find the 201 for only about $20 more than this model, and the extra money is well worth the rechargeability of the 201 and freedom from the batteries. But if you really can't afford the cost, you're not going to be hurting too much with the 101.

The Forerunner 101 offers athletes an easy-to-read display and integrated GPS sensor that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data--all in one compact unit that straps to your wrist. It's a lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more. And because it is a high quality Garmin GPS device, you get many of the features GPS users have come to rely on, such as precise latitude, longitude, and altitude data. The Forerunner 101 is easy to use right out of the box and it delivers the benefits of GPS technology.
Although it lacks the rechargeable battery and PC connectivity features of the Forerunner 201, the 101 retains all of the other great features of the 201, at an even more affordable price. The Virtual Partner feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.
Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're traveling with for easy viewing.
Other Forerunner 101 features: Mark specific locations, and then look-up and navigate to these points using an electronic map. Amount of calories burned can be tracked and calculated over the course of a workout. Lap history--such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace--can be stored for 5000 laps. Performance data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide an accurate record. Automated stopwatch provides auto-lap and auto-pause features. Pace whistle sounds alert when you begin traveling slower or faster than your desired pace. Time and distance whistles can be set to sound when you reach a specified duration or distance in your workout.
