HP iPAQ 111 Classic Handheld (FA979AA#ABA) (110 Series) Review

I have owned several Pocket PCs, including a few earlier versions of the iPaq. Of the ones I have tried, this is probably the best, though its not a great leap forward. Having WiFi, Bluetooth, SDHC support (previous versions didn't support the new higher capacity cards that this one does - I have an 8Gb SD card in mine), a standard USB connection (previous iPaqs I owned use a proprietary USB connector) a relatively fast processor, the latest version of Windows Mobile all whilst retaining a relatively small form factor is a strong combination. Whilst many will opt for a Pocket PC phone (as my last Windows Mobile device was), having a seperate PDA from your phone has advantages for some e.g. if you are obliged to use a particular mobile phone for work (as I am) then you don't need the phone features on your PDA. With this device I can keep all of my personal contacts seperate from the business contacts on my phone and use the bluetooth feature to get my phone (a Blackberry Pearl) to dial any number I select on my iPaq. I have read other reviews on Amazon and can't say I have experienced any of the problems described. The screen on my iPaq works fine (no odd colours displayed) and windows media player has not yet crashed on my once (and I have listened to quite a lot of music and watched video on it). Overall, not a stunning leap forward but hard to find fault with it.

JENSEN VM9424 6.2-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Navigation Receiver Review

JENSEN VM9424 6.2-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Navigation Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since theres not a lot of people that wrote reviews, I thought I'd write a more detailed review.
Shipping is very fast, packaged very well.
Unit comes fully loaded with almost everything! GPS, IPOD capable, Rearview camera capable.
I installed this into my 2003 Honda Element. I used the 70-1721 wiring harness from this site. All the wires are pre-cut so wiring was easy.
The unit itself is fairly easy to navigate around, any dumbass can do it. The sound is incredible, the one thing I like is you can preset the sound to any level when it starts-I sometimes forget I blast it!
Navigation is quick, it boots up and finds me from 10-15 seconds. The user interface for this is also very easy, again any dumbass can use it. I posted complete specs of the unit below. Happy buying guys!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jensen's VM9424 navigation receiver lets you upgrade your car's audio system to a multimedia powerhouse with a user-friendly 6.2" touchscreen. You'll have access to a powerful built-in navigation system and CD/DVD playback, along with a well-rounded set of audio and video capabilities.
Audio and video at the fore
Play your all your audio discs on the VM9424 -- including CDs or DVDs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can connect and control your iPod® via USB, while Jensen's MediaLink cable offers a single connection center with an audio auxiliary input, A/V input, and USB input. Refine the sound in your cabin by adjusting the 3-band equalizer, or keep it simple by selecting one of the preset EQ curves.
You can enjoy DVD movies on the 6.2" video screen when you're parked, or share the fun with backseat passengers by adding video screens to the two video outputs. For iPod video content, add Jensen's optional J-Link cable. Jensen includes a full-featured remote so your passengers can control the entertainment.
Navigation built in
You'll find your way with ease with the VM9424's navigation system, developed hand-in-hand with industry leaders like Horizon Navigation, NavMate, and Tele Atlas. The receiver boasts 11 million points of interest throughout the United States and Canada, with accurate routes, reliable guidance and time estimates. Maps and information are preloaded on an easy-to-access 2 GB SD(tm) card, so updating down the road is a quick and easy operation.

Pioneer CD-IU230V Ipod Audio/Video Direct Cable For Avic-F900Bt & Avic-F700Bt Review

Pioneer CD-IU230V Ipod Audio/Video Direct Cable For Avic-F900Bt and Avic-F700Bt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this cable about 8 months ago and could not have been happier. Occasionally the connection would fail but it was nothing reconnecting the iPhone couldn't solve. Sound quality was fine. No complaints. About a month ago however, I began experiencing strange failures. Either the passenger-side speakers/sub in my 370z wouldn't work at all with sound only coming through the driver's side. Occasionally, the connection would come through full of static, extremely muted or "fuzzy". These symptoms became permanent yesterday.
For a $50.00 cable, less than a year of use before failure is utterly unacceptable. Now I have to go through the hassle of taking my headunit out to install another cable. I'm going to try the Apple version (assuming it will work) rather than this shoddy knockoff.

Stay safe while navigating the coastal waters with the Cobra MR F55 dual-power marine VHF transceiver. The radio, which boasts a selectable output power of either 1 or 25 watts (for short or long communication), lets you talk with other radios within at least a five-mile radius, and sometimes as far away as 25 miles, depending on conditions. It's an essential tool for communicating with marinas, the Coast Guard, other boaters, and commercial towing companies, all of whom can offer life-saving assistance during a crisis. And because VHF radios work on a party line, any boat that's within range can listen in and provide help, or they can relay the signal to a professional that's outside your range.
The MR F55 operates on any of the three channel maps established in U.S., Canadian, and international waters, while also picking up 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The latter feature ensures instant access to national All Hazards and weather warnings 24 hours a day, so you'll always know when a storm is approaching. And because it's nearly impossible to monitor the NOAA channels at all times, Cobra integrated an audible weather alert tone and visual alarm into the radio. Other safety-enhancing features include instant access to emergency channels 16 and 9 and a function known as Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which allows you to send a distress signal at the touch of a button or exchange position information with other boats or stations.
Furthering the MR F55's safety reputation is its GPS compatibility. When connected to a Cobra or most other GPS receivers, the MR F55 can send your GPS position to other boats in an emergency, or it can exchange position information with other boats or stations. This life-saving feature saves a ton of time in a crisis, as it helps rescuers locate your craft quickly and efficiently.
The device is a breeze to use, with a large, illuminated LCD display, backlit function keys, and a noise-canceling microphone with its own control buttons for crisp, concise communication. Boaters can also connect an outside speaker to the unit thanks to the external speaker jack. All this in a sleek, black, water-resistant chassis (it's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes). In addition, the MR F55 comes with both flush mount and surface mount kits, so you can install the radio in or on almost any flat surface using the supplied hardware.
The transceiver measures 6.25 by 2.25 by 7.125 inches (W x H x D) and carries a three-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box MR F55 transceiver with microphone, flush mount kit, surface mount kit, GPS interface cable, user's manual.

JVC KW-AVX830 Double-DIN Multimedia Satellite/HD Radio/Bluetooth Built-In with 7-Inch Widescreen Touch Panel Monitor, DVD/CD/iPod/iPhone USB 2.0 Review

JVC KW-AVX830 Double-DIN Multimedia Satellite/HD Radio/Bluetooth Built-In with 7-Inch Widescreen Touch Panel Monitor, DVD/CD/iPod/iPhone USB 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had the unit installed for about 2 weeks now. Over all it's great. This is my first of this type of head unit.
A bit tricky at first to navigate around, and I would say if you're not that "electronically inclined" then it will take a lot of reading of the manual. I'm one that likes to figure things out for myself.
The only issue I have that still needs to be addressed is the Blue Tooth. I can hear everyone fine, it dials fine, connects fine, but no one can hear me. I think the issue is with the mic itself.
The touch screen works great and seems pretty accurate in its response to where you touch. The "blackout screen" feature is awesome and a nice touch. All you do is bring your hand close like you're going to adjust the volume and it comes right back on. This is an adjustable feature.
The built in EQ is also a nice feature with customizable "user settings" for different types of music.
Going from Source to Source is very easy to change with either a touch of the button or touch the screen and choose from the Source menu.
I also have the JVC steering wheel control adaptor that is great. It allows me to use my factory installed head unit controls on my steering wheel for Volume, power, source, etc...
I also added the HD radio. So far it's pretty cool and I'm still finding stations that I like. The sound is amazing for radio.
I also have the iPhone cable so I can use the video feature on my iPhone. But this is not a necessity because the unit does come with a USB 2.0 cable interface and will control an iPod with no problem. I love this feature. I use to have my iPod hooked up via an aux input but this is so much better being able to tuck away the iPod in the glove box and be able to control the iPod and see what playing with the album art showing. The interface control are OK, but when you want to scroll through artist or song titles, you don't have the letters A-Z listed next to the scroll bar, so you have to guess. That would be an easy thing for JVC to add.
The DVD feature works great too. Pretty easy to use and sounds great. Eventually I'll be adding the headrest screens so the kid can watch movies on a road trip it's an easy thing to add. The unit has standard RCA outs to make it easy to install. Just needs to be removed.
I love the fact that the unit has the removable face. This is uncommon for touch screen units. A big plus and probably why I bought the JVC over the Pioneer.
I also look forward to adding the XM satellite radio to this as well.
Again, overall a great unit with a lot of potential "add-ons" and very easy to learn and use for the person that knows this stuff or someone that doesn't mind reading a manual.
Make sure to shop around. Most store and on-line retailers sell the base unit for around $650.0, but I got mine for $540.00with free shipping and not tax. It allowed me to buy additional add-on that I got from various on-line retailers. I literally got everything from the head unit to the installation parts from 5 different stores on-line. But it saved me hundreds of dollars shopping around for everything. It was very much worth it.

Proximity Sensor The KW-AVX830 features a unique proximity sensor. When your hand approaches, the screen activates and control keys appear. When left untouched, the keys disappear so you can concentrate on the main screen.

Detachable Face Panel Upon exiting your vehicle, you can detach the double-DIN face panel and carry it in the included case (or hide it in the vehicle) to help guard against theft.

Built-in BluetoothWireless Technology Drive more safely (or legally depending on where you live) with hands-free calling. The included wired microphone offers flexible settings for clear communication. The Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) for iPhone lets you automatically access your phone book without transfer. You can also manually transfer up to 400 numbers from compatible cell phones. Changing from hands-free to a private conversation can be done by a push of a key. You can also easily switch Bluetoothconnection between 2 phones, such as for business/private use.

Old and New Media Play back your favorite DVDs, VCDs and CDs--the monitor folds down for a slot-loading disc player. Of course, many of us now have a library of digital files, and JVC's AV series addresses this with support for WAV/MP3/WMA audio files, playback of MPEG 1/2 video, and display of JPEG images.

Enjoy Dolby Digital sound to accompany your video content, along with a three-band parametric EQ for tweaking things to your preference.

USB Audio and Video for iPod/iPhone The USB connection for iPod/iPhone provides clear digital sound directly from your iPod or iPhone. You can also enjoy video by adding the optional KS-U30 cable.

While your device is in use, it also receives a charge, so it's ready to step out of the car when you do.

System Building While theKW-AVX830 gives you a MOSFET 50W x 4 amplifier to begin with, it offers plenty of room to grow with three 5V preamp terminals (front, rear, subwoofer), a subwoofer control, and a high-pass filter. Set up your ideal audio system.

On the video front, this receiver features AV & Video inputs, for adding external devices like video game systems, and a video line output for setting up an external monitor for your passengers. Dual Zone operation means the kids can enjoy a movie in back while you listen to the radio up front, or other combinations to keep everyone happy.

Still after a few more entertainment options? Adding HD or Satellite Radio is as easy as connecting one of JVC's tuners to the expansion port.

Last but not least, the KW-AVX830 is ready for a Steering Wheel Remote, for integration with modern vehicles.

Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Old Version) Review

Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Old Version)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First Impressions: The kit is very small and lightweight. Setup is trivial, although I would recommend calibrating the unit. The voices are nice, and it decreases the music volume during announcements to keep a constant listening volume. My main reasonable complaint is that you need to see the screen when starting/stopping. This sounds obvious, but the nike armband (only one available at that time which holds the nano with the nike receiver connected) does not allow you to see the screen. The first problem I encountered was; after changing in the locker room I set the screen where I only had to press the center button to start my workout (no screen necessary for that!). But my the time I stuck it back in the armband, left the locker room, got some water and left the building, it automatically went back to the main Nike+ menu so I had to remove the nano again and go through it again _right_ before starting my run. Along these lines, if you do not memorize how to end your workout with the menu (multiple button presses and menu movements) or don't take the nano out of your armband at the end of the workout to manipulate the menu, it is possible to "end" a run without the run actually being recorded as a run (e.g. after my second run, the total mileage had increased by almost 5 miles, but the "previous run" menu still only showed my prior day run and when connected to my computer, no new run was uploaded).
Note: To remedy this, I now just pause my workout when I'm through and wait for the system to automatically end it for me!
Shoe pod: I do not wear Nike running shoes but I have high arches. I am able to stick the pod underneath my insole just at the bottom of my arch and it doesn't bother me while I run. Also, make sure the pod is flat in your shoe and oriented with the long axis along the length of your shoe. If it isn't snug and oriented properly, your distance will be really off (my first run of 42 minutes was "2.05 miles"). I have more recently cut a recess in my insole right at the base of the arch and now I don't even feel it. Again, be careful and please don't cut into the bottom of your shoe, remember it should be snug because you don't want it sloshing around while you run.
Calibration: People have reported good calibration out of the box, but mine was off. After a couple of weeks I calibrated the system 4 times around lane 1 of a 400-meter track (1 mile) and a course that had previously been 4.76 and 4.69 miles turned into 5.54 miles (much closer to what my map was telling me).
Accuracy: After running for months with it, this unit is much more accurate than I expected. When my GPS works, there's nothing better, but it's very inconsistent in a cloudy city like Pittsburgh. I really like the consistency of this unit. You should be aware that even after calibration, the unit will show longer distances when you run faster, but since most distance runners are fairly consistent during most training runs, this isn't a huge issue. As long as the shoe pod is snug and it's been calibrated, I get better than 95% accuracy, even on hilly courses (better on flats). You probably wouldn't want to use this to determine your 10k race time, but it's wonderful for normal training.
Pros:
1. Very motivational!
2. Works fine out of the box and easily [...].
3. Distance isn't dependent on clear skies and barren land like a GPS (i.e. works fine in downtown areas as well as tree covered trails and cloudy/rainy days).
4. Don't _need_ nike shoes to make it work well.
5. It allows you to "experiment" more on runs, because now you can say "hey I wonder where that leads" and not have to worry about wondering how far you actually ran.
6. Decreases music volume while it tells you your run statistics.
Cons:
1. You almost _need_ to see the screen to work the start and end workout menus. It is possible by touch, but sometimes when your fingers are sweaty the thumb wheel doesn't move as precisely as one would like. It is sort of strange that the only armbands designed to integrate the nike receiver (the nikeplus armbands) don't actually allow you to see the screen, even though it's necessary to use the nikeplus features!
2. No Auto-Pause feature: The entire purpose of this thing is to track your speed and time. You would think that you could set it to pause the time when you stopped moving! I completely don't understand why that is not an option.
3. The pause function needs to be longer. If you pause your workout for more than a few minutes it will automatically end your workout. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the auto-off/sleep function of the Nano, but I have found no settings to control this, after 4-5 minutes it will automatically end your workout.
4. The information announcements could be a little shorter. It's fine, but there should be a "short announcement" option that leaves out "completed", "current pace" and "distance" which is all pretty obvious.
[...].
Final thoughts: This is a great little addition for runners. It actually convinced me to upgrade to a Nano (from a Shuffle) and I can't say I'm disappointed. Although there are improvements I would like to see, I think this is a great offering that many runners would thoroughly enjoy and utilize to help them achieve their running goals. I'm also glad to see Nike is continuing to upgrade the web interface and software features of this device! Keep up the good work!

Garmin Forerunner Quick Release Kit Review

Garmin Forerunner Quick Release Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This kit contains a velcro wrist strap with a sturdy plastic mounting clip. The original strap pieces are permanently removed using the supplied tool, then the strap pins are replaced into the 305 body. The pins can then clip into the mount on the velcro strap, or the identical part of the bike mount. Removing the unit from the bike and putting it on your wrist, or vice-versa, takes less than 5 seconds.
The reviewer who said you have to take several minutes to re-attach the original wrist straps after taking the 305 off your bike seems to have failed to grasp the concept; the velcro strap *permanently* replaces the original straps.
The only potential downside I can think of is that the clip on the velcro wrist strap could hang up on long sleeved clothing, like a wetsuit, so triathletes will want to put the strap on during T1. Other than that, this is a very handy piece of kit!

Timex Ironman Triathlon BodyLink System Heart Rate/Speed/Distance Review

Timex Ironman Triathlon BodyLink System Heart Rate/Speed/Distance
Average Reviews:

I have trained for 2 marathons and 2 half marathons with this equipment. Can't run without I need the feed back to keep a steady pace. Satellite lock up is good. When you couple the heart rate monitor and date sensor you can keep an accurate running journal. Every time I think maybe the equipment has reached it life span a new battery in the watch and one in the heart rate monitor has got me right back on track.
I do wish Timex would add topology capability. After reading reviews on other brands I am going to buy my wife a Timex Bodylink.

Timex Data Recorder Review

Timex Data Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is the contents of an e-mail I received directly from Timex today 5/20/04. This is on a unit that I ordered at the end of last summer. It has never worked correctly. I really wish I had bought something else. By the time they actually get this system working properly it is going to be completely outdated. In the meantime if you already own one of these and you experience the "static" flaw and it crashes as described in the previous review, the one way around this is to run with the recorder so that it does not experience any friction. Some people wear it on an armband with some luck. I managed to get it to record an entire marathon, but only by holding the unit in my hand the entire way. (YEAH, that was fun....)
Notice how at the end of his message he mentions that they "hear from our dedicated Data Recorder users every day" I think what that means is that they are getting COMPLAINTS about these units everyday.
These units were released for sale when they never should have passed through quality control. Now it seems Timex can't figure out how to fix them after months and months.
From Timex:
-------------------------------------------
"I discovered your e-mail and did some research...
I show that T___ S____ created a record for you in our database and
your e-mail was forwarded to Quality Control at our Corporate Offices. I
apologize that we do not have a timely solution for you. You are on
the list to receive a replacement when they become available.
A corrected version was released earlier this year but we discovered
the problem was still not corrected so back to the engineers it went. We
are still waiting. We know how you feel as we hear from our dedicated
Data Recorder users every day.
We hope to have good Data Recorders available in the near future.(...)

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first touchscreen phone and I'm really having fun with it. In my line of work, I need to be able to access medical and hazard material data immediately and reliably, while being able to call any number of public and private agencies. The reason I say this is because my number one requirement is reliability, and that is closely followed by usability. I've had Palm PDAs for my reference books (no more bags of books needed) and progressed through the blessing of phone/pda combinations beginning with the Treo 700 and 755 to the Blackberry Curve and then the Blackberry Tour. I now have the Blackberry Storm 2 and have no regrets. I was quite nervous about making the jump to touchscreen because I was so used to a keyboard, moreover the history of the Storm wasn't stellar. I did my research, played with various devices, read the reviews (Amazon included) and bought the phone. In doing so, I bypassed the Droid, the Eris and LGs.
The good:
1)The BB9550 has been phenomenally reliable without a single glitch or hardware issue.
2)It is very fast and opens up my medical reference texts faster than my Tour did.
3)The bigger screen makes it possible for me to read attachments (big reason for switching to a full screen phone)
4)Email is blackberry awesome with multiple accounts managed easily
5)As a music player, photo album and video device is is excellent
6)Keyboard is great--I love the feedback "click". I cannot understand the whining about tired fingers...how does one type on a regular computer keyboard or use a pencil without some muscle? All I can say is that if you're tired from the miniscule effort of texting, perhaps the issue is wimpy fingers
7)Memory availability is fantastic.
8)Touchscreen is reliable, solid...the entire phone feels solid and well built.
The bad:
1)Learning curve using the keyboard configurations with my fat fingers--am getting quickly better and more efficient
2)Battery life does suck--I charge continually by habit (always have, regardless of device)
Bottom line, I really like this phone and am very glad to have gotten it. Am giving my excellent Tour away as a gift!
As you can see, the "bads" are relative and not really factors for such a powerful device.

Uniden makes a lot of great durable gear but this one takes it. Besides having a color lcd screen with GPS and many more feature than I'll ever use, apparently the entire unit is submersible. Amazing gear. I swapped out an old Uniden radio I thought wasn't working - turned out the antenna wasn't connected - doh. I'm using this one now with (2) of the wireless, submersible handsets - great combo.

Garmin Colorado 300 Bilingual Handheld GPS Unit with North American Maps Review

Garmin Colorado 300 Bilingual Handheld GPS Unit with North American Maps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this GPS on hikes with navigational requirements and just general testing. These are my conclusions after a few calls to Garmin Support and searching GPS forums. The good news is that it is well constructed, has many features. If you buy the city, topo, and marine mapping, you can probably do it all. It has a fairly basic ease of operation (after you get the settings customized). The bad news is that the manual is way too general and if you want to do basic custom setups, you might have to call Tech Support but the unit is so new that even they don't always know the answers (do not e-mail them questions, call instead. Much better support). That's were the GPS forums can come in handy. The problems I have encountered is first and foremost how difficult it can be to view the screen outside (especially topo detail) unless you have the sun shining directly on it. The backlight under low light conditions (shade, early morning hours) outside will not help. The altimeter does not seem to be the most accurate at times and when you have the unit turned off, drive to a new location, turn it on, the altitude can sometimes still read your last location until you recalibrate it. Even with it set to auto calibrate and full satellite bars. NMHI rechargeable batteries do not work well with this unit if you value the backlight. There is a bug in their firmware (hopefully they will get it fixed soon) that will turn the backlight off permanently after a very short time and in some cases, that I have been reading, completely shut the unit off even when the batteries have a full charge. Some people have had problems with the current time not updating even after the GPS has locked into satellites and have been told to return the unit for an exchange, but mine has worked fine. The manual tells you how to access settings but gives no detail as to what the settings mean, leaving you to experiment, dig, accidentally find what you want, or call tech support for even basic things as transferring archived (saved) tracks to your PC, transferring topo map detail, or deleting archived tracks. Some of the things I have mentioned are bugs that will hopefully get resolved with firmware updates but right now, I can only moderately recommend this GPS. It has taken me a lot of time playing with this unit, experimenting, calling tech support, and reading blogs to operate it to my satisfaction (minus the bugs).

Brunton Eclipse Adventure Racing Compass Review

Brunton Eclipse Adventure Racing Compass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Prior reviewers have done a good job describing the many nice features of this compass. It has a declination adjustment, the markings on the compass ring are to one degree. It has UTM tools for 5 different scales and 5 different radius rings for marking targets on a map. It has a small ruled (3 inches) straight edge that has metric on the back. It comes with a short lanyard. Unlike some similar Brunton compasses, it does not include a whistle. The "circle in circle" design makes following a bearing about as easy as a compass can make it.
However, the very first time I raced with the compass, all the UTM markings washed off of it. So did the blue circle on the base plate, making the "circle in circle" feature hard to use, impossible in low light.
I contacted Brunton about the problem and did not get any response, not even the courtesy of acknowledging the feedback on their product.
Then I set down my pack on a hard surface and the compass came out of the base plate. I was able to replace it, but it didn't inspire confidence.
I really like the features this compass offers, but have been disappointed with the durability, particularly of the markings, and the lack of response from the manufacturer. If they get back to me, I will edit this entry.

Take the versatile Brunton 8096 Eclipse compass with you into the backcountry as a companion to a GPS receiver. This needleless base-plate compass provides UTM roamer scales with confidence circles and template scales to compensate for GPS inaccuracies. Other features include a map magnifier, circle-over-circle alignment system, and magnified readout with 1-degree graduations. The reversible inch/mm slide scale ensures accurate navigation.
This compass is declination adjustable with a NdFeB disk magnet and sapphire-jeweled bearing. The Eclipse 8096 is waterproof, measures 5.125 by 2.75 by 0.44 inches and weighs 1.7 ounces. It comes with a wrist lanyard and a limited lifetime warranty.

Timex Ironman Triathlon Trail Runner Bodylink System Review

Timex Ironman Triathlon Trail Runner Bodylink System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most cyclists who keep performance data use some sort of Polar product- I picked up the Timex for it's relatively open protocol, 3D GPS data and compact size. I strap the watch to my handlebar with the included rubber mount and drop the other two units in my water pack or seat bag. The system works as advertised- with a caveat that you can expect problems using the data recorder. Timex says some units shipped with bad transmit/receive modules and are replacing them.
The provided training software is the most basic imagineable. However it does allow the GPS unit to export NMEA data for upload and mapping at sites such as GPS Visualizer. Other software like PCCoach also imports the Timex data and Timex provides an open source library for interfacing with the system. Kudos to Timex for that.
There are lots of part to the system- I like the flexibility. You can decouple the GPS data and get up to 72hrs of HRM data recorded! On the other hand, I can envision losing track of the data recorder which is very tiny. Perhaps Timex can make the accessories in a gaudy color so they are more "sporty" or create a "find it" feature so they are easier to find if they are misplaced.
The HRM picks up signals well with no body cream or fussing about required and is relatively comfortable to wear. The HRM is also "coded". This might be a feature for runners who participate in mass events where they are closely packed, it just annoys me. It renders the HRM unable to interact with my I-Magic trainer and means I've got to go back to Timex if/when the strap malfunctions, Thankfully Timex, allows you to change your own battery.
The GPS unit seems to pick up signals quickly and well. I haven't had dropouts when riding along the towns and tree-covered roads of New England. The unit does turn off if you aren't moving so be sure to check it if you stop for a snack or to fix a flat. Being able to view my route in Google maps and mail NMEA formatted rides to other people is great. It could be a fabulous tool for making cue sheets. If a firmware and software update allowed the Timex to have more waypoints and allow waypoint upload/downloads/cueing this feature would be killer.
The watch itself is relatively easy to operate which is a good thing because the manuals spend so much time reiterating everything in multiple languages they don't have room to provide any actual, useful instructions. Be prepared for lots of trial and error when trying to access functions, reset values and get things to work as you'd like them to. However, it's comfortable and suitable as an everyday watch. For cyclists there are real-time mode, summary, navigation, waypoint and interval display modes which can be customized somewhat. The watch allows programmable HZ bands. The pace display is limited to mile/minute since it's oriented towards runners; cyclists will have to go to the summary data display when the ride is over to get that data. If you're looking for power or cadence data you'll need to also have a SRM or powertap.
The data recorder is both the strength and weakness of this system. Yeah it's lightweight, long-lived and records lots of data. It is also difficult to use, inflexible and unreliable. It decides for itself when data constitutes a new ride so I often find I can't get good summary data like ride time or average speed. I can't figure out how to change what you are recording except with the PC software. The sync cable is USB but has a proprietary connector to the recorder which is awkward to attach and seems fragile. The cord is also easy to forget at home when using a laptop on rides. A standard micro USB connector would be nicer. The recorder is activated by a single button but regularly fails to connect to the watch, HRM or GPS. The system provides no diagnosics or recourse that I could find. It should connect to the HRM, the GPS or both 100% of the time with no messing about and offer on the spot recording filters. On the upside the unit is lightweight, and the battery and storage capacity are excellent. I hope Timex provides software and firmware updates so I can pick when rides should be broken up, don't have to fiddle with the recorder to synch and can pick what I data want to record in the field.
If you're a recreational or touring cyclist, this is a useful system for training and keeping track of ride data. I'll give it a four based on the data recorder issues and the runner-focused displays. A few tweaks and it would be a killer unit for cyclists.

I've been a Pioneer "Fan Boy" for many years, and have owned a little more than a 1/2 dozen of their mobile audio head units. Each Pioneer/Primier HU I purchased got progressivly better as time went on, and each one offered more and more features.
The AVH-5200DVD, so far, has been my favorite Aftermarket HU to date - but my very first video capable unit. I'll break this review down into a few sections.
SELECTION / DIY INSTALLATION: I chose this unit for its single-din design, and motorized screen. This allowed for what I considered a "lower profile" install, and helped keep folks in the parking lot from being too impressed with the stereo to consider breaking into my SUV. I own a 2007 Jeep Commander Sport (no OE Boston Acoustics amplifier for you Commander owners out there), and am pretty protective of my possessions as I'm sometimes not in the nicest of areas.
Installation was a breeze, especially having installed several in the past. As always, you'll want to look up/purchase the single din conversion kit for your particular vehicle. I'm using a Metra branded kit, mostly b/c it was the only option. I also recommend a wiring harness.
Something a little unusual about this unit over previous models is the inclusion of an "external" radio receiver. Its pretty much a small 1"x3"x4" box that contains all the guts for the AM/FM radio. My assumption is that since the screen retracts into the body of the unit, they had to sacrifice some space internally and the radio got the boot. The HU and the radio box simply connect together with a proprietary cable that is included in the packaging.
Something else "new" for me was the inclusion of the parking brake wire. You're supposed to ground this on your parking break to allow you to watch video while parked. Aparantly its not recommended to drive with video playing in the front seat. There are ways to "hack" this - but you'll have to do your own Google search on that.
***NOTE: Make sure you boot up the unit BEFORE you put the dash back together. The screen screen slides out and into a pre-determined angle and distance from the dash - there are controls in the set-up menu that allows you to chose a "pitch" and 2 distances from the face of the dash. I pitched mine back a few clicks for a better viewing angle, and set it up to extend out a little further due to a lip/overhang on the top of my dashboard.FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Once I had the unit installed, I "oooooh'd" and "aaaaaaah'd" over the glossy finish, the smooth action of the screen sliding out and into position. The unit should be fully booted up by the time the screen locks into position.
There are tactile buttons on the exterior that made sense to me. Track Skip/Advance and Reverse, Source, Menu, Mode (for switching from possible GPS mode, regular mode, rear camera, and rear seat video), and of course Eject and Screen "Hide/Open". Since the unit is a touch screen, I feel a little better about using the "physical" buttons to advance songs, rather than having to look away from the road to change tracks.
When the car is shut off, the unit waits a few seconds, beeps to remind you take the removeable anti-theft faceplate with you, and quietly retracts the screen. The anti-theft face is sort of a joke, I'm not sure if it's keyed into this specific unit, and its removal doesn't radically alter the appearance of the unit - so a thief might not know the faceplate is missing until they've smashed their way into the car. INTERFACE: The interface is a little confusing to learn at first, with some items not being labeled. You'll want to play with it a bit before cruising around and trying to operate it. Keep your manual handy in the glove box if you ever get confused. Its quick and easy to pick-up though, and I mastered it within a few short days.
The 7" screen, animations, and graphics are great - fonts and displays are easy to understand a read - even while driving. The unit is a show-stopper, and will impress your passengers the moment the screen slides out and blazes to life.
The touch screen controls are intuitive, though the sliding motion will be a little awkward to you iPhone and BlackBerry Storm users out there as the pages don't "glide" after you've lifted your finger. Very little pressure is needed to activate something on the screen. Just a VERY light tap. You can calibrate the screen too if you need - but mine operates flawlessly out of the box.
The screen is a matte texture (very smart) - which guts down on glare from other light sources like the sure and reduces finger prints/smudges.
You can also change the colors of the external lighting - and the interface colors to match your car's esisting lighting. The ability to make your own custom wallpapers is amazing as well.AUDIO PERFORMANCE: The MOSFET powered amplifier built into the unit pumps crisp clean highs and punchy powerful lows from the Commander's 6 speaker factory speakers (haven't replaced them yet). It currently pushs two 3.5" mid/high speakers, two 6x9" woofers in the front doors, and two 6.5" mid-rangers in the rear doors. The sound fills the cabin of this fairly large SUV nicely with minimal distortion at fairly loud volumes.
I'll be upgrading to a 5-channel amp shortly, using all 3 of the RCA inputs on the reverse of the unit for front, rear, and sub componants.
The menu gives you a great EQ options with 8 bands, bass boost control, 3 "loudness levels", Front/Rear/Sub crossovers, and much much more. Pretty much everything you need to build an audiophile set up.
iPod integration works well. I was a little disappointed that they put the USB input on the front, and not the back as I'm unable to hide the cables for a clean install. It's nice though, for people that want to play files off of a USB flash drive, etc...
I'm using an iPod Classic 160gb loaded down to about 80% capacity. Songs read clear, with song ID tags loading promptly with just a slight delay. There is also a delay when using the SongLink feature - which allows you to search for songs/genre/album/artist based on what is currently playing. In some cases it took several minutes to load up some results. I'm ASSUMING that this is because of the sheer number of songs I have loaded onto the Classic, and the fact that it is a hard drive based player. My wifes flash memory-based iPod loads song data instantly, and has a much faster SongLink retrieval time. So this is probably iPod technology-based, not Pioneer Hu software-based.
I organize all oy my music by genre - so tearing through the organization tree is fast and efficient. The "Alphabet Search" is fantastic too. You slide your finger along the alphabet for the first letter in your search, and a LARGE magnification of that letter appears in the middle of the screen, making it easier and safer to see while driving.
Album art loads a few seconds after the song begins to play and looks pretty sharp - it even animates a little when it loads - making for a flashy display. VIDEO PERFORMANCE: DVD's play just as they're supposed to - like any normal DVD player. Menu items are selected by simply touching the option with your finger. The unit supports several aspect ratios - most of my movie collection is in 16:9 widescreen format - so it fits perfectly. The 16:10 stuff looks great too.
I watched the original Star Wars trilogy (not the new CGI garbage Lucas put out recently) in its entirety on my way too and from Gatlinburg with nary a hiccough or hang up.
It is capable of reading video from an iPod as well. I'm having issues with it reading video from my Classic 160gb, but my wifes flash-based iPod Nano reads perfectly. My issue with the Classic is probably the encoding method I chose to convert the music videos to that I had intended to watch.EXPANDABILITY!!! I, personally, am happy that Pioneer decided to make this unit one of their more "expandable" head units - giving the consumer a boatload of technology to add onto their unit at their leisure and in small increments as your personal cash flow allows.
Just a few of these "upgrades" include:
Bluetooth (if you didn't buy the unit with BT built in - the AVH-5200BT)
HD Radio - I don't personally listen to the radio, unless its a little conservative talk radio, and thats mostly on the AM bands
Sirius/XM Satillite
Rear View Camera
and - most notably - GPS Navigation
You can also add rear seat video monitors utilizing the rear video output on the unit,Now on to some of my gripes about this unit:
No remote control - every single Pioneer HU I've ever purchased came with a remote. This one, for whatever reason - did not. At $500 for a HU, I'd think a remote might not be too much to ask.
Expansion module price - I'm also a little disappointed in the price of the expandsion modules. Dropping $500 on a HU, then another $400 on a GPS unit might seem a little insane - but if you look at the prices of head units that INCLUDE GPS, the price comes out on par, or cheaper, than an "all inclusive" option.
The SOMETIMES slow crawling speed of the iPod library search - even though this is probably iPod related - a 15minute long search for a tune is more than little rediculous. The integrated search on the iPod itself would only take a dozen or so seconds - MAX. Of course - 100-160gb of music/movie files could be a little overwhelming. Perhaps Jobs will offer a little support and help Pioneer find a way to speed up this process.

Advanced Sound Retriever Hear the detail, warmth and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3, WMA and AAC files stored on USB memory device, iPod and portable digital players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tend to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies.
Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner Pioneer's legendary Supertuner IIID combines the best of digital and analog tuner technologies to reduce distortion to bring you exceptional FM and AM performance. If you live in an area where reception is weak, you'll hear a big improvement in signal strength. And when you're near tall buildings, Supertuner IIID reduces the effect of multi-path noise, which occurs when the signal is reflecting off of the buildings.
Always have your favorite stations at hand with 18 FM and 6 AM user presets. And when you're somewhere new, let the tuner do the work for you by activating the Best Stations Memory (BSM) function. The tuner will seek out the 6 strongest stations in the area and set them into the tuner presets.
Dial in Your Sound Use and customize EQ curves, adjust the eight-band parametric equalizer, or change loudness and bass boost settings to get the perfect sound.
AUX-In Connection Use the built-in AUX input for connecting any digital portable player and other external auxiliary devices. For extra-convenient access, the AVH-P5200DVD has this A/V input on the front panel.
MOSFET 50W x4 Amplifier for the Power Hungry Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, delivering power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. And that doesn't just mean a boost in volume: it means that your music will be cleaner at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. Clean, efficient power that will rock your vehicle.
For those who'd like a bit more power, three 4V RCA preamp outputs are also included for system expansion (front/rear/sub).
Available Bluetooth Wireless Technology Use the available CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter and Bluetooth-enabled cellular phones for easy, safe, and hands-free operation, including talking via the headunit's microphone and your vehicle's speaker system. The system automatically mutes any other audio during incoming or outgoing calls.
Add the Power of Navigation This receiver is ready to take direction with the optional AVIC-U220 navigation module, a sleek navigation unit that supports AVIC feeds, enabling you to create custom trips, as well as your own points of interest. The plug and play AVIC-U220 puts Pioneer's legendary AVIC navigation at your fingertips.
