(More customer reviews)I love this watch and never travel without it. I followed the instructions in the manual and use the thermometer a lot. To get an accurate ambient air temp reading I just take off the watch and wait about 8 minutes in the shade. You can also calibrate the thermometer and found the factory setting to be dead accurate! I discovered that if you read the temp while wearing this watch it will read your skin temp and have found this to be very helpful in monitoring my skin temp. Anything less than a 83 degrees means I am starting to get uncomfortably cold and need to warm up. 86 degrees skin temp is perfect for me. Knowing this allows me to tell if I have a fever or just over worked etc.
I use the altimeter alarm function when I fly to alert me of a faulty cabin pressure system during my commercial flights. I set my PAG 40 alarm to 8000 which is the maximum altitude pressure allowed in passenger cabins set by the FAA. If the cabin pressurization goes above 8000 ft the alarm will sound on the PAG 40. There is a graph at the top of the screen to check your altitude history. The graph is also used for tracking barometer history.
I calibrate my altimeter daily to get an accurate reading since the barameter will change by the hour.
The compass feature is great and you can also calibrate that too. I find the compass usefull at night and on heavy overcast days.
You get 5 seperate alarms and a short alarm for the top of each hour. All the alarms can be turned off or on seperately.
The stopwatch function does split times and single timing. It will not do laptimes for example timing laps at a race on after the other.
It runs on 4 batteries part# 395. Which I was able to change them myself.
Watch speed calibration was also accessible!
The display is large and easy to read.
I have owned my Casio PAG 40 for two years now.
The watch band has held just great so far and the watch is free of defects.
I plan to buy two more of these watches.

I was intrigued by a new watch by Casio the Pathfinder 5000-1.
My disclaimer I used a Casio G-Shock Watch while stationed with the Army in Iraq. The watch held up to harsh conditions. My only concern was if the watch batteries die I will be without a watch. Casio has taken away that worry with what they call Tough Solar. You do not have to worry about batteries anymore.
Pathfinder 5000-1 has a analog face and along with a digital readout, It packs a lot of technology in a small package. Features such as timer, alarm, stop watch mode are standard on most watches but the Pathfinder 5000-1 has much more. It is a rugged but sharp looking watch which gets the time by Atomic Clock and has a daylight saving time override. The watch has a built in compass, attitude, and barometer. There are three buttons on the side that have those functions. I never get tired of holding the compass button down and watching the second hand point to North. The digital readout has an arrow and tell you the direction you are facing. The barometer is quite useful in seeing if the weather is going to change. The watch module is very fast and you can easily switch modes. The light button is a white light so you can see your watch face at night.
The Pathfinder 5000-1 is Casio is top of the line Pathfinder watch. It is a not a small watch but then again it is packed with a lot of features. This watch you can wear out to dinner or take out on combat mission. It is light and has a rubber watch band which will last the user a long time and is easy to clean.
It cost more than the other Pathfinder watches. But the old saying is you get watch you pay for holds true with this watch. The watch retails for $ 450.00 .

Casio Men's PAW1500-1V Pathfinder Multi-Band Solar Atomic Ultimate Watch Review

(More customer reviews)I recently received this watch as a gift, as I already owned a Casio Pathfinder PAW1300G-1V (the earlier model), and it was thought that I would appreciate the upgrade.
In short, this is a nice watch, but there aren't that many features over the PAW1300 line to justify the increased size. Unfortunately, in spite of these new features, I find that I still go back to the PAW1300 as my daily watch, simply because it's a better package as a whole.
There are three major new features in the PAW1500 series that are not in the PAW1300:
-- Tide calculator
-- Moon phase calculator
-- Water resistant to 200m (instead of 100m)
The increased water resistance is terrific, as this turns the Pathfinder into an actual diving watch, instead of a mere snorkeling watch. But the other two features, in my opinion, are underwhelming, and the cost in the module's case-size are quite great.
To whit: the PAW1300 is 47.4mm round and 11.5mm thick. The PAW1500 is 51mm round and 13.9mm thick. This may not sound like a big difference, but side-by-side, it's palpable. Before obtaining this watch, the PAW1300G-1V was the largest one I owned (in a close tie with the Seiko Orange Monster). Now this watch completely dwarfs it. It's so big, I feel like I can use this watch to deflect bullets, Wonder-Woman-style.
(If you like big watches, then don't listen to me. If you don't care, but want this watch anyway, then get ready for the predictable, "Good thing that watch is water-resistant to 200 meters, because you'll need it when that watch drags you down to the bottom of the ocean"-type jokes from your friends, and even strangers.)
Additionally, the 1500PAW has some shortcuts, like the countdown timer. The PAW1500 only has a "yacht" timer, which means that you can count down only from a maximum of 60 minutes. Instead, the PAW1300 has a full 24-hour countdown timer, which is something I use frequently. To find this feature crippled in the PAW1500 was a disappointment. (Also, the altimeter only has a 20-record capacity in the PAW1500 compared to the 40 records in the PAW1300, but I don't think many people will be affected by this.)
The PAW1500 does have one minor pro that I should mention: the information is better-displayed than it is on the PAW1300. Despite the watch's large size, there is technically less space in the LCD display for numeric/text/icon information, but to me the information is presented with a cleaner layout and is more intuitive to read. I.e., I think it makes the best of what it has, and I wish that the PAW1300 had done a better job in this regard.
In short: if you are looking to get a cool outdoor-gizmo watch, this one will deliver heaps of features in spades. The solar power is awesome, and once you have atomic syncing, you'll never go back. The other features, when you learn how to use them, are extremely powerful in combination.
Still, I would advise that you be honest with yourself. Do you really need 200m water resistance, and calculators for tides and moon-phases? (And do you really want a watch the size of a beverage coaster?) If not, then I would recommend that you take a look at the PAW1300 series. It's considerably cheaper, and the size is less obnoxious.
(The PAW1300G-1V in particular is noteworthy in that the band is not integrated with the case, but can be swapped out for standard one-piece 22mm bands, like the Zulu or NATO straps.)
There have been many generations of Pathfinder watches over the past several years, and to me, the PAW1300 feels like the golden version: the Pathfinder done right (well 90% right). Unfortunately, the PAW1500 feels like an awkward, next-generation compromise in order to pack in those few extra features. Maybe the PAW1600 will be an improvement.
As a final note: I see a lot of reviews for the Casio Pathfinders complaining about the lack of accuracy. Please note that these watches need to be calibrated to local conditions if you want them to be truly accurate, and even still, you should fully understand how the features work (and the basic science behind them) if you want to get the best use of these watches. If you are looking for a zero-maintenance, GPS-quality dashboard for you wrist, I would recommend looking at the Garmin Foretrex 101 (while a terrific piece of equipment, it's not solar-powered, and will require changing the AAA batteries every 10 hours).

(More customer reviews)I've owned a lot of great watches over my 30 years of adulthood -- from inexpensive Timexes to my beloved Movado -- but THIS ONE is SOMETHING SPECIAL! Why "special"? Because, simply, it does everything it is advertised to do; and it does well, and with a touch of class!
Casio obviously put a lot of thought into the design of this watch and its features. The digital compass is the snappiest and most accurate I have found in a watch. The altimeter is a gem....accurate to within 5 meters (or about 20 feet). The barometer is quite sensitive and the trend graph on the watch face has proven to be very useful. The thermometer works great and, if kept a short distance from the warming effects of the skin, is very accurate and sensitive. The atomic clock update works like a charm here in Virginia.....takes about 3 minutes for an accurate "fix" each night. The motion sensor that turns on the face light in dark areas when you tilt the watch towards your face is terrific....especially in a dark car when you can't take your hands off the wheel to check the time....but the watch face lights up as you tilt your arm towards your face. Now how cool is that????!!!!
A couple of lessons learned since I brought this gem home: READ the owner's manual! Yes, it's complex and will take a couple of hours to go through carefully....but it will save you endless frustration and will tailor this watch exactly to your own needs and desires. It's a VERY complex watch.....but once you get it set up (ie, power-use modes; metric or English measurements; tides set to your beach, etc....), it becomes an incredibly useful tool that you will be consulting frequently throught each day and night.
A second lesson learned: follow the instructions and CAREFULLY calibrate your "reference altitude" and the barometer. The best instructions for doing this, in tandem, and taking into account ambient temperature, is critical and is well-laid out towards the END of the instruction manual....in the "Reference" section. Accurate calibration of the altimeter and the barometer are dependent on the ambient temperature....so read those instructions....they are well-written and take you step-by-step through the short process.
This watch may look big.....but it's not as big as some other watches I have owned. It's thinner than the G-Shocks.....and sits on my very lean wrist quite nicely. The watch is designed to be worn OUTSIDE long-sleeve clothing to allow proper charging of the solar battery....and be most useful as a reference instrument! When wearing short-sleeve shirts or T-s, I put a 1" sports wristband on my wrist first....then put the watch over it. Works like a champ.....and tends to keep the thermometer, barometer, altimeter a whole lot more accurate with the slight seperation from body temperature. (I use the Under Armour 1" Performance Wristbands under the watch.....and they disappear beneath the watch...but allow the watch to sit very confortably and securely on your wrist....yet not add any significant "bulk." You can find them here at Amazon (good price!) and in sporting goods stores.)
Bottom line: if you enjoy cutting-edge technical gadgets that work REAL WELL.....AND serve a very useful purpose.....AND enjoy top-notch quality......AND great support from the folks at Casio (check out their website!).....this is the watch for you. It's gem!

(More customer reviews)I've been happy with this watch, and it takes getting used to a pressure-based altimeter to realize how to use it best... if you're familiar with the concept of setting a reference altitude, you'll figure it out just fine.
It's reasonably robust, though one button has seemingly shifted inward slightly, requiring a much firmer press, after a fall to a rock ledge while hiking. So be it, I can't blame Casio for me juggling my watch and dropping it, can I?
The battery life is such that I generally (almost always) leave the "auto-backlight" turned off, as it will run the battery to low at times if I sleep with the watch on, turning its backlight on when I shift in my sleep.
Two points that I can't make sense of in the slightest, which are: first off, and this truly a pure software question, for some reason the countdown timer does not go longer than an hour, which I don't appreciate; secondly, it would be fantastic if there were a single button or button combination to return to the main time screen, from which you can access barometer, altimeter, and compass functions. It is a bit irritating to have to go through six screens while looking at the watch to find your way back.
One other small note, the backlight will not stay lit when you press any button, so you need to light the backlight, press whichever button you'd like, and then re-illuminate to confirm the step taken.
The longer timer and the backlight remaining on were two points that timex got right with my cheap nearly disposable ironman digital, it's odd that casio hasn't had the sense to fix these minor points.
Don't expect the watch to update to atomic time every night... some nights it fails to hook up, and that's not really a terribly big deal...
All in all, very happy, though some aspects of the interface are a little bit user unfriendly. Also, as everyone else has said here already, the thermometer doesn't work in any meaningful way while the watch is on your wrist. If you want to spend hundreds more, get a suunto with gps, but for my money, and with the functional solar power, I'm quite happy with the watch.
One other minor point, in respect to criticism in quite a few reviews here, I've not had any issue with the excess of the band not remaining in the retaining loop, there is a ramped spot on the end of the band that seems to do a great job keeping it in place. Not sure if this is a design refinement or not, but I've not had any issue in that area.
